Artificial Football Turf Installation Guide
Step-by-Step Installation for Football Fields (Infill & Non-Infill)
Tools & Materials
Ground & Base
Sand / crushed stone / grit, hand tamper, tape measure — for leveling and compacting the sub-base.
Cutting & Joining
Utility knife, adhesive & seaming glue, joint tape, hammer — for laying and bonding turf rolls precisely.
Infill Materials
Silica sand, rubber granules, lawn spreader — for infill systems requiring cushioning and stability.
Finishing
Turf rake / power broom, wide broom, marking paint or white turf — for brushing, lines, and final surface work.
Step 1: Base Preparation
A strong and stable base is critical for field performance and durability.
1. Ground Preparation
Remove all debris — rocks, roots, and uneven areas. Ensure a smooth, compact surface before laying any base material.
2. Build Sub-Base
Apply crushed stone or grit layer and compact thoroughly using a tamper. Add a 1–2 cm leveling sand layer, then level and compact to a smooth finish.
3. Drainage
Ensure a slight slope for water drainage. For concrete bases, clean the surface thoroughly. Pre-design the drainage gradient before installation begins.
Step 2: Turf Layout & Installation
1. Pre-Installation Check
Inspect pile height, color consistency, density, and tuft bind. Roll turf under sunlight for 1–2 hours to relax fibers before laying.
2. Layout & Cutting
Plan layout and mark positions. Lay turf rolls across the field and cut from the backing side. All rolls must face the same direction — grain alignment is critical.
3. Seaming Process
Align turf edges precisely and fold edges back. Place joint tape underneath, apply adhesive evenly, then press edges together when glue is tacky. Use backing lines for straight cuts.
Critical Seaming Rules
Seaming is the most failure-prone step. Follow these rules without exception:
- No grass fibers must be trapped inside the seam joint
- Apply firm pressure by stepping or hammering along the seam
- Add weights on top of seams if needed to maintain contact
- Allow adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours before use
- Do not walk on seams during the curing period
Step 3: Field Markings Installation
For football pitch lines and logos, the Inlay Method is recommended for professional fields. It delivers durable, non-fading lines that are fully integrated into the surface.
- Cut marking shapes from the green turf
- Remove all loose fibers from the cut area
- Insert white turf lines into the cut areas precisely
- Fix with joint tape and adhesive
- Apply pressure and allow full curing — result: durable, professional, non-fading lines
Step 4: Brush the Turf
- Use a stiff broom or power brush
- Lift flattened fibers after installation
- Brush in multiple directions for an even, natural finish
Step 5: Infill Installation (For Infill Systems Only)
Layered Filling Process
- Spread silica sand evenly across the surface using a lawn spreader
- Add rubber granules in layers and brush between each layer
- Repeat until the target infill height is reached
- Ensure fibers remain upright and the surface is stable and even
Benefits: Improves shock absorption. Enhances stability. Extends turf lifespan.
Step 6: Final Inspection & Finishing
- Clean the entire field surface
- Check all seams and edges are flush and secure
- Verify line markings for accuracy and alignment
- Brush the final surface to lift all fibers uniformly
Field is now ready for use.
Non-Infill vs Infill Summary
Non-Infill Turf
No sand or rubber infill needed. Lower ongoing maintenance. Ideal for training grounds and recreational fields where simplicity is a priority.
Infill Turf
Requires silica sand and rubber granules. Better shock absorption, cushioning, and performance. Recommended for match-grade professional fields.
Pro Installation Tips
- Install in dry weather conditions for best adhesive performance
- Always align turf roll direction before cutting
- Do not walk on seams before adhesive has fully cured
- Use mechanical brushing for large fields to ensure uniform fiber lift
- Professional installation is recommended for sports-grade projects
With proper installation, your artificial football field will deliver consistent performance, long-term durability, and professional appearance.
