Artificial Grass Installation Guide
Simple Steps for Landscaping Turf Installation
Tools & Materials
Ground & Base
Sand / crushed stone / grit, hand tamper, tape measure — for leveling and compacting a solid sub-base.
Cutting & Fitting
Artificial grass rolls and utility knife — for accurate layout, trimming, and shaping to fit the area.
Seaming & Bonding
Adhesive & seaming glue, joint tape, hammer — for joining turf rolls with clean, invisible seams.
Finishing
Turf rake / stiff broom, silica sand (optional) — for brushing fibers upright and adding infill if needed.
Step 1: Prepare the Base
A solid and level base is essential for long-lasting performance.
1. Clean the Ground
Remove all debris — rocks, roots, sticks, and uneven areas. Ensure the surface is smooth and firm before adding any base material.
2. Build the Base Layer
Apply a thin layer of sand, crushed stone, or grit and compact thoroughly using a hand tamper. Add a 1–2 cm sharp sand layer, then level and compact until smooth.
3. Drainage Tips
Ensure proper drainage by creating a slight slope. For concrete surfaces, clean thoroughly before installation and ensure the drainage gradient is built in.
Step 2: Turf Preparation & Installation
1. Pre-Check Before Installation
Check pile height, color, density, and tuft bind. Roll out the turf under sunlight for 1–2 hours to relax fibers before laying.
2. Layout & Cutting
Plan layout and mark positions if needed. Lay out turf rolls over the area and cut from the backside using a utility knife for clean, precise edges.
3. Grain Alignment
All turf pieces must face the same direction for grain consistency. Use the backing lines as guides to ensure perfectly straight cuts across every roll.
Step 3: Seaming the Turf
A clean seam is invisible when done correctly. Follow all three phases in sequence.
Joining Process
Place two turf edges side by side. Fold back edges and place joint tape in the center. Apply adhesive evenly on the tape. Optionally apply glue on turf backing edges.
Bonding
Wait until glue becomes tacky — not fully dry. Press edges together carefully, ensuring no grass fibers are trapped in the seam.
Fixing the Seams
Press firmly by stepping or tapping with a hammer. Add weights if needed. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before any use.
Critical Seaming Rules
Seam failure is the most common installation issue. These rules must not be skipped:
- No grass fibers must be trapped inside the seam joint
- Apply adhesive evenly — avoid lumps or dry spots on the tape
- Wait until glue is tacky, not wet — pressing too early causes slippage
- Apply firm pressure along the full seam length by stepping or hammering
- Allow a full 24-hour cure time before walking on or loading the area
Step 4: Brush the Turf
- Use a stiff broom or turf rake
- Brush fibers upright — they may be flattened during transport
- Brush in multiple directions for a natural, even finish
Step 5 (Optional): Add Silica Sand Infill
Silica sand infill is an optional finishing step that significantly improves the performance and longevity of your artificial lawn.
- Spread a thin layer of silica sand evenly across the surface
- Brush the sand into the turf using a stiff broom
- Benefits: improves stability, helps fibers stand upright, and enhances overall durability
Pro Installation Tips
- Install in dry weather for best adhesive performance
- Always align turf roll direction before cutting
- Avoid walking on seams before adhesive fully cures
- For large projects, consider professional installation
Your artificial lawn is now ready for use. With proper installation and basic maintenance, it will remain durable, stable, and visually appealing for years.
